'Low light on the Twr Bach Lighthouse', Ynys Landdwyn, Anglesey, 40x40cm oil on board (framed)
£2,000.00

This painting is of a scene I captured in a photograph of the lighthouse on Ynys Landdwyn. It was captured around mid morning in winter, with low light off to the south east (left). This scene is very famous and there are lots of photographs taken from similar locations. This was the first time I had visited it and as luck has it, we got a spectacular day (and low tide). The light was perfect, skipping over the headland and hitting the side of the lighthouse.

This is the second painting I have done of this scene. Earlier in the year, I did a smaller study in acrylic paint (20x20cm). Since completing that one, I wanted to come back to this, painting it in a larger format and in oil paints.

As a side note, Ynys Landdwyn is a tidal island. At low tide it is a peninsula connected to Anglesey, but at high tide it is fully cut off. Jo (my ex wife) and I strolled over to it completely unaware. Fortunately we were back over before being cut off. A lucky escape this time!

'The Old Brig Athena', Traeth Penrhos, Anglesey, 40x40cm oil on board (framed)
£2,350.00

Traeth Penrhos is a beautiful beach just on the other side of Ynys Llanddwyn. Although neighbouring Traeth Llanddwyn is more famous, this beach is in itself is a beauty. It is located just on the other side of Ynys Llanddwyn (to the North). My ex wife and I would often head out on this beach for our weekend morning runs. I particularly love it at low tide when it opens up into a massive expanse of sand. A fantastic place to lose yourself for a bit!

For this particular painting, I elected to try a few new things. I wanted to paint a scene with looser brush strokes, softer edges and a bit more vibrance in the colours. It is fare to say it was a bit of an experiment and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. I want the viewer to be enticed to stay in the painting with the brig in the foreground and then work into the painting, on to the woman walking the dog.

I had often been curious as to what the collection of timbers you see in the painting is (or was). As it works out, it is what is left of the 'Athena'. She was a brig which ran aground in 1852. She was sailing from Alexandria in Egypt to Liverpool in England. Fortunately all 14 of the crew were heroically rescued by local lifeboat men in very rough conditions.

'Alpe di Seceda', Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, 20x20cm oil on board (framed)
£850.00

About the Location: The Alpe di Seceda is located on the sunny side of Val Gardena, at the foot of the Parco Naturale Cisles-Odle (nature reserve), part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage. The Alpe di Seceda is the highest point on the western side of the Val Gardena, sitting at 2,500m.

This specific view is iconic because of the jagged ridgeline of the Seceda. The region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol is a unique cultural blend of Italian and Austrian heritage, but geographically, it is defined by 'Dolomite' rock—a carbonate rock that gives these mountains their signature pale, almost architectural appearance.
