'Castell Mawr', Traeth Coch (Castle Rock, Red Wharf Bay), 40x40cm oil on board (framed)

£1,850.00

I was very fortunate to live so close to Traeth Coch, a beach which lies between the villages of Pentraeth and Benllech. This beach is truly spectacular and rightly a top spot to visit on Anglesey. At low tide the beach grows into massive expanse of sand right across the bay. After visiting this beach earlier in the year, I knew I wanted to paint it. Of particular interest is a prominent 'Castell Mawr', a Carboniferous Limestone and Sandstone outcrop which dominates the landscape. I wanted to make it the highlight of this painting and worked to create an image which draws the viewer towards the cliff.

There is something neat about looking at a big piece of rock, knowing that it was formed such a long time ago, this particular piece, would have been formed over 300 million years ago….

Fun wiki fact/info - Castell Mawr is believed to have once been the site of a Iron Age fort, but today is a protected refuge for nesting seabirds.
