'Mellon Udrigle', Wester Ross, 50x40cm oil on stretched canvas (framed)

£850.00

My father, Sandy Weir, captured this scene in a photograph from a visit there a couple of years back. He kindly gave me permission to paint it. I have visited this remote and incredibly beautiful coastline several times. Come rain or shine it has a rugged beauty which is timeless. This view is particularly striking, looking out onto the Gruinard Bay, out to the Summer Isles and beyond to the distant mountains on the mainland with Stac Pollaidh standing out in front of the backlit sky.

Fun wiki fact/info - Located in Gruinard Bay is Gruinard Island a.k.a 'the Island of Death'. In 1942, during the Second World War, a biological warfare test was carried out on Gruinard by British military scientists. It was recognised that tests would cause long-lasting contamination of the immediate area by anthrax spores, so a remote and uninhabited island was required. Tests were carried out with the desired outcome. It was only in 1990, after 48 years that warning signs were removed and the island repurchased by the previous owners.
